Hazardous substances management in South America
The gradual implementation of the GHS regulation worldwide confronts manufacturers and importers of substances or mixtures with different obligations depending on the legal situation in the target country. This also applies to the South American area.
In Argentina, the creation of safety data sheets is regulated by the IRAM 41400-2020 standard. The 6th revision of the GHS regulation was implemented there. An inventory of chemicals is currently being planned, but has not been implemented yet.
The basis for the creation of safety data sheets in Brazil is the ABNT NBR 14725-4: 2014 standard. This third edition is a technical revision of the same standard from 2012. The first revision was published in 2009 and its content differs from the 2012 version. The 2014 revision has been binding since 1st June 2015.
The legal situation in Chile is somewhat different. A draft version for the implementation of the GHS regulation has existed here since 2017. Chile is a member of the OECD, whose Council adopted an obligation on its member states to implement the GHS regulation in May 2018. Consequently, Chile is also obliged to speed up implementation.
